WELCOME BACK TO VISUAL ARTS NEWS!

Smith’s Hill Visual Arts students have had quite a busy time creating and learning of late…..

VISUAL ARTS AGNSW EXCURSION.

On Friday 10 March students from Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts travelled to the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney to view the ARTEXPRESS exhibit of exemplar artworks created by last year’s HSC Visual Arts students from across NSW. This invaluable experience allowed SHHS students the opportunity see first-hand how a school student similar to themselves could create an extremely well-constructed artwork that also contains deep conceptual meaning. These 45 artworks created in one of 12 expressive forms (including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and film) could also be used as inspirational starting points for the development of their own ‘Bodies of Work’ (major art projects). Students also enjoyed the current art exhibitions with the other parts of the AGNSW including the recently opened multi-million dollar ‘North Wing’. See Image and Video created by Visual Arts Teacher Leah Newman:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-rztZxOsbzsJSF5_lHqvW-j8i2k_rKJS/view

YEAR 12 VISUAL ARTS

Year 12 Visual Arts students are currently busy creating their BOW’s (Bodies of Work – Major Art Projects) and continuing to improve their exam skills through Artist Case Study research and essay writing practice. With the Major Works due at the end of August the pressure is mounting. With hard work, and a little bit of luck, students may be selected for ARTEXPRESS – the AGNSW annual exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of the HSC examination. Last year’s Smith’s Hill High School Visual Arts student Kelly Zhao was fortunate enough to be selected as part of the 2023 ARTEXPRESS exhibit. Kelly worked hard on her painting project, a personal narrative triptych entitled ‘Five Minutes More’, and deservedly was chosen for the exhibit. (See image below).

YEAR 11 VISUAL ARTS

Students are continuing their Preliminary studies and engaging with the experimentation of different art media and material processes. Recently the students competed a number of fine drawings (See image below). Currently students are finishing some small paintings before moving into the three-dimensional art practice of sculpture.

STAGE 5 VISUAL ARTS ELECTIVE ‘RESTORING TRADITIONS’

Students have recently completed work on ink and mixed media artworks inspired by the work of Australian-British artist John Woseley. Using Woseley’s methods of layer artmaking processes and depicting elements from the natural world, students created a range of fine artworks with imagery taken from nature and beyond. (See Image below).

YEAR 8 ART EXTENSION ELECTIVE

Year 8 Students are utilising their knowledge and skills gained in their Year 7 studies to further explore and develop their art making abilities and sensibilities. Recently students explored (multi-coloured) reduction printmaking, using as collage as an inspirational starting point for their work. (See image below).

YEAR 7 VISUAL ARTS

Year 7 students have worked diligently throughout the term while exploring the fundamentals of Visual Arts - The Elements and Principles of Art & Design, culminating in a number of fine Colourful Sea life influenced Artworks using ink-wash, pen, and collage. (See Image below). Students will next experience Sculpture with the Ceramics Unit of Work.

ART GALLERY OF NSW (SYDNEY)

If you have not already done so, a trip to the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) Sydney is highly recommended, with the new North Wing now open and containing a vibrant range of Australian and International Artworks. This new part of the AGNSW almost doubles the exhibition space of the Gallery with permanent and semi-permanent artworks on display. It is open seven days a week and some evenings. https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/whats-on/exhibitions/
