Extra Curricular Music Ensembles information  2024

ENSEMBLES OFFERED

The music faculty is very pleased to offer a variety of extra-curricular music ensemble opportunities for students in years 7-12. We have a concert band, string orchestra, jazz ensemble and guitar ensemble which cater for the beginner to advanced player. Vocal students can be involved in the vocal ensemble, and selected students are invited to be a part of the acapella group. All rehearsals take place in the Music and Performing Arts Centre (MPAC).

Please contact the Music Department if you have any queries or your child would like to join an ensemble. Fees for all ensembles are for the entire year.

CONCERT BAND – tutored by Kathleen Russo - Tuesday 2.45pm - 3.45pm 

This ensemble caters for students from years 7 to 12 with skills ranging from beginner to advanced. The concert band plays both concert band and stage band repertoire. Instruments in the concert band include piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, baritone, trombone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, tuned percussion, percussion and drum kit, as well as bass guitar.

STRING ORCHESTRA – tutored by Kathleen Russo  - Tuesday 7.30am - 8.25am 

The string orchestra is a popular school group and perform at many school events, as well as functions across the Illawarra region. Students playing the violin, viola, cello and double bass are welcome to be a part of the string orchestra.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE - tutored by Wollongong Conservatorium Of Music Teacher Eric Dunan -
Tuesday 7:30am - 8:25am

This is an extension ensemble and is made up from students already in the concert band. 

GUITAR ENSEMBLE – Tutored by Wollongong Conservatorium of Music Teacher John Spence -
Tuesday 2.45pm - 3.45pm

Any guitarist who can read music and would like to be a part of the guitar ensemble is welcome to attend. The group consists of guitarists of a range of levels.

VOCAL ENSEMBLE – tutored by SHHS Music teacher Lisa Wellings - Wednesday 2.45pm - 3.30pm

All students are encouraged and welcome to join the vocal ensemble. Students sing a varied repertoire, mostly in 3 or 4 parts, and perform on numerous occasions throughout the year, both at school and at external events. Students in this group require no prior experience.

ACAPELLA GROUP  - tutored by SHHS Music teacher Lisa Wellings. This is a small auditioned group. Students are selected on their ability to follow a score and confidently hold a vocal part with good tone. It is aimed primarily at older students.
