SHHS Girls Hockey

After our big win against Nowra, the girl’s hockey squad recently travelled to Mittagong for a game against Moss Vale. It was one of those days in Wollongong where everyone was complaining about how cold it was and it had snowed in the Southern Highlands overnight!

Moss vale are known as a powerhouse of hockey and they had some very good players. However, we did too and we gave them a real run for their money. The 6-1 scoreline to Moss Vale didn’t reflect the even nature of the game and the opportunities that we had in attack. In reality, the only difference between the teams was that they had a State level player who was very quick to turn defence into attack and had a very powerful shot on goal. Vera Bosancic in goals and our fullbacks Sofia and Diya stopped her on many occasions but she still managed to score or set up a few more. Destiny Ferguson also showed her class and skill by marking their star player and keeping her much quieter than she liked.

Our halves, Audrey, Natalia, Ashika and Tessa did a great job of distributing the ball down the sidelines and also keeping their wingers quiet. Up front we had Juliet, Reet, Rose, Hannah, Lauren, Emily and Eadie and they were all excellent. Eadie and Emily were assigned the task of being “pests” and they proved surprisingly adept at fulfilling this role!

Our one goal came from terrific team play where the ball was worked down the left wing to Rose who got it through their defenders to Destiny. Hannah knew her job at right wing was to be near the post and she did everything perfectly, slotting home Destiny’s pass, just like we had prepared earlier. Hannah gets the glory but the team did a terrific job in the leadup.

All up, it was a good day out and our team represented the school with great sportswomanship and were excellent ambassadors. We will miss Sofia and Natalia next year but all of the others will be one year more experienced and that will make a fair difference.

Well done to all.
