Cookie Excavation

students excavating chocolate chip cookies

As part of the ‘What is History’ unit in Year 7 History, Gipps students are investigating Archaeology and what archaeologists do and how they do it. After watching a short clip on how archaeologists excavate fossils from the matrix, they endeavoured to practice these skills on choc chip cookies…with outstanding success! The students were asked to rate the activity and explain why…

‘The activity was brilliant; we learnt a lot about archaeologists and how they clean artefacts. I was, however, deeply saddened because I am gluten free and was unable to eat the cookie, post excavation ’ Fin 8/10

‘Our class got to learn about the basics of excavation, such as what the matrix is and the correct methods for removing fossils from the matrix. We got to learn more about archaeology in an enjoyable environment.’ Stephanie S 10/10

‘We learnt a lot about what archaeologists do and how to dig out fossils in a fun and delicious way.’  Ziva 10/10

‘I love hands on activities! Especially ones that involve food.’ Albert 10/10
