Earlier in the year two of our Year 10 students, Fang Fang and Yuan Yuan Guo, entered into a mathematics and statistics research competition run by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Melbourne University. They tackled very difficult and unfamiliar problems and submitted a research project.
Their submission was judged to be one of the top 6 responses nationwide and, as a result, they were invited to Melbourne (all expenses paid!) to present their research project as senior finalists in late October.
The girls flew to Melbourne the day before and had the fantastic opportunity to explore the university and the city. On the day, the pair gave a presentation to academics and answered technical questions relating to their methodology and findings. Although they didn’t win, they were the youngest team to be nominated as finalists, they both enjoyed the challenge and had a terrific time talking with mathematicians and other groups during the event.
This is a fantastic achievement and the girls are congratulated on doing so well and being such wonderful ambassadors for our school.
