Legacy Junior Public Speaking

We have certainly hit the ground running with debating and public speaking going online so that all competitions could go ahead.

Firstly, we had Maeve Bradbury win the local final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking competition and then go through to the State Semifinal held online last week. Maeve presented two amazing speeches and received some great feedback, but unfortunately was not chosen to proceed to the State Final. Out of 24 speakers, only five are chosen to proceed. Maeve should be very proud of her achievement in reaching the State Semfinal.

Premier’s Debating

Next up was a new and different debating competition where one speaker was chosen to represent Year 7/8 and another speaker chosen to represent Year 9/10. They were then given a topic and side to prepare for:

Year 8: ‘That we should ban all social media for people under 18

Year 10: ‘That we should ban gambling on sports

And debate against other students in the State…

The top eight speakers were chosen for their teams to continue into the State Quarter Finals.

Needless to say, there was much pressure on those chosen to represent their teams!

Emily Condell was chosen to represent Year 10 and Will Brown to represent Year 8… AND they both made it through to the top eight out of over 30 students from across the State! Congratulations Emily and Will. Both SHHS Year 8 and 10 teams will now play off in the State Quarter Finals 😊

Debating Update

The Year 8 Team of Abbey Zubovic, Otto Bennet, Will Brown, Prisha Angadi and Arwyn Newton just defeated Merewether High School to proceed to the State Semifinal!

SHHS were the negative for the topic: ‘That school captains and leaders should be chosen by teachers to reflect the school's diversity instead of by a vote’.

This young team impressed the adjudicators and showed how forced diversity actually has a negative effect. Go team!
