While we have all been cooped up in our homes, not getting our much-needed dose of vitamin D, it hasn't been necessary for us to remember to wear a hat. Now that we are back at school and participating in physical activity outside in our PE and sport lessons, it's time to remember to wear them.
This is such a good habit to get into because:
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, and melanoma is often referred to as 'Australia's national cancer'.
- In 2019, it is expected that there will be 15,229 diagnoses of melanoma of the skin - close to one diagnosis every half hour
- Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian men, after prostate and colorectal cancer
- Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian women, after breast and colorectal cancer
- Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting 15 to 39-year-old Australians
- In 2019, it is predicted that there will be 1,726 deaths from melanoma of the skin - that is one Australian every FIVE hours
Tips for remembering your hat:
- Put it on your daily bring to school check list
- Buy a school hat from the school uniform shop and leave it in your school bag permanently (don't forget to label it!)
- Stick a reminder in a common place at home.
Be sun smart - it might save your life.
