In line with previous debating news, we are still sprinting along in debating with no less than 17 debates completed at the end of Term 3!

Our Year 8 team have completed rounds 2 and 3 of their Premier’s Online Debating Competition against Kanahooka and Corrimal High Schools. They debated the topics, ‘That years 7 and 8 should never use technology in the classroom’ and ‘That we should teach year 7 and 8 students self-defence.’  SHHS lost the toss on both occasions to become the negative, however, won both debates on the key principles that technology provides many educational opportunities and that we shouldn’t teach children to react to bullying in a physical manner. Congratulations to the year 8 squad of Ava, Anika, Victoria, Scarlett, Clara and Julia! This team is improving with every debate and are eagerly awaiting the next step in their competition.

The very next day SHHS was involved in the UoW Online Debating Tournament. SHHS had five teams debating from Year 7 through to Year 10. Each team had three debates against other teams with similar speaker scores from the adjudicators. At the end of the day 4 teams were announced as semi-finalists to proceed through to a finals day to be held in Term 4. In a field of 24 teams the top 4 teams were:

1.      SHHS 1

2.      SHHS 2

3.      SHHS 3

4.      Edmund Rice College 1

In a phenomenal day, where we had five debates running at any one time with each team in charge of their own zoom meeting, it was a real test of all our technological skills! I was impressed by all teams, but especially our newly selected Year 7 teams whose enthusiasm and genuine team work had everyone on a debating high. Well done team!

THEN… on Friday Year 10 had their Premier’s Knockout Round 3 debate against Penrith Selective High School. The topic was, ‘That we should have a Minister for Young People in Parliament’. SHHS won the toss to automatically become the affirmative. In a highly sophisticated debate that the adjudicator admitted was the best debate he had seen all year, SHHS was able to show that the youth would be better represented, even if the minister wasn’t young, as there would also be a shadow minister that would act as a check and balance if the minister wasn’t doing their job. SHHS Year 10 team will now proceed to Round 4 of the competition! Wooo hooo! Way to go Portia, Olivia, Patrice and Emily!

PHEW! We are all exhausted and need a holiday!
