Dr Karl Kruszelnicki

On Friday, 16 August, one of Australia’s leading science communicators, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki visited SHHS as part of Science Week to discuss future careers in IT, how computers will be as smart as we are, genetic engineering, inventions, basic physics (“if we get rid of mass, we can travel to the stars at the speed of light”), environment and what we can do to fix it.

During the morning, Dr Karl was gifted an amazing pair of hand-painted shoes (in the theme of space, of course) by our wonderful arts teacher, Ms Jones-Sweeting.

In the evening, he was joined by Astrophysicist Professor Geraint Lewis, who took the wider school community on an electrifying journey that joined the astonishing (and often tenuous) dots between light, electrons and the workings of our colourful universe, such as “What is the colour of an electron? Why is gold a golden colour? How do electrons relate to Pirates of the Caribbean and carrots and the colour of dinosaurs? How does the world look to the crazy eyes of the mantis shrimp?”  It was educational, inspirational, funny and engaging.

We cannot thank them enough for giving their time, expertise and insight into the world of science. We are excited to see what the next generation of young scientists in our school will discover.
