As a member of the NSWDU team, Laura Charlton travelled to Darwin last week to compete in the National Debating Championships. I would like to point out here that these championships are the pinnacle of High School debating and each team represents the very best speakers from their State, both from private and public schools.
A round robin competition was held throughout the week with NSW breaking first to enter the semi-finals. After defeating Victoria in the major semi-final, NSW went straight into the final and then came up against Victoria again in the final, as they defeated Western Australia in the minor semi.
The topic was, ‘that the Democrats should impeach Donald Trump’ and NSW were the negative. And NSW WON!!
Laura has been successfully selected for this team for two consecutive years, which is a phenomenal achievement and was presented with one of the prestigious Highly Commended Speaker Awards. These awards are based off accumulated speaker points from all debates over the week, which is also an amazing achievement!
Looking back, Laura from Year 7 only wanted to trial for team advisor…
What an amazing journey!
