Two weeks ago Elinor Stephenson flew to Brisbane for seven days as part of the NSW Debating Union Team for 2017, to participate in the NATIONAL Championships. This team represents the very best of NSW speakers from ALL schools, and just making the team is an exceptional achievement.
Over the seven days NSW competed against all other Australian states with some strong wins, narrow losses and split decisions. They eventually broke first, which means they were the top ranking team into the semi-finals. They lost their first semi-final against Queensland, but because they were ranked first they had the advantage of a second chance and they won their second semi-final! For the third time that week they met Queensland in the Grand Final, but for the first time… they WON! Elinor Stephenson and her NSW team were announced National Champions and were presented with ‘the Door!'
This is a phenomenal achievement that Elinor has worked extremely hard towards. Ellie is instrumental in the development of debating at SHHS and takes on every opportunity offered to her with enthusiasm, and thoroughly deserves this success!
