L to R: Serena Gao, Tianyu (Ellen) Zheng
Congratulations: Serena Gao and Tianyu Zheng
Smith's Hill High School would like to recognise the efforts and success of all of our HSC students in 2017. It is no surprise that Smith's Hill High School has achieved such noteworthy HSC results in 2017, given our highly successful year to date; with three State Champion Debating teams, a State winning Theatresports group, a runners up team in the Australasia-Pacific Tournament of the Minds Competition and too many more achievements to mention. Our students are simply remarkable. All of our teachers have worked tirelessly, inspiring and supporting our students for a long period of time. Significant energy has gone into providing students with formative feedback that make students think, self reflect and seek to improve.
Congratulations must go to Serena Gao and Tianyu Zheng who have both achieved first place in the State for their respective courses. We are very proud of you both.
Serena's achievement in Software Design and Development is absolutely outstanding. In what can be a male dominated course, she has broken gender barriers in displaying her amazing intellect and her strong work ethic.
Tianyu or Ellen as she is more affectionately known, is an accelerated student in Maths, Maths Ext 1 and of course Japanese Continuers. She is a diligent and highly talented student who had to fight tenaciously to be able to undertake all of these HSC courses two years ago. She has certainly proven that she was a worthy HSC candidate, achieving brilliant results in all three courses. Most significantly, Ellen's 1st place in Japanese Continuers is a great outcome for a student of fantastic character and work ethic.
Congratulations must also go to Brendan O'Connor our tech savvy Software Design and Development teacher and Tim Grifffiths our gifted Japanese teacher, as well as the families of these students who have supported and sacrificed for these young women's education for many years. Lastly, much kudos must go to David Deitz our Principal whose philosophical mantra "First is nice, but best is better" guides our approach at Smith's Hill High School to the holistic education of all our amazing students, though in these cases best was first.
