Inquisitive, innovative and inspiring! Another year of success for our students at the Illawarra Coal Regional Science Fair, held at the University of Wollongong. They were outstanding representatives for our school in both attitude and application, showcasing a scientific experiment that they had investigated. Students were judged by, and had a chance to talk with a diverse range of people in the community, including local scientists. They also had the chance to see the new science labs at the University and listen to experiences of a well travelled archeologist. With some really strong competition from other schools in the area, (As far South as Moruya and West to Dubbo) our students stood out from the crowd and took home some fantastic prizes! All of these students have initiative, ambition and enthusiasm - the chemicals that react to produce our budding scientists!
Congratulations to Ali Sangi, Ethan Samper, Celeste Young, Kamyah Shah for performing at a regional level. Kamyah's project received applause at the presentation as it was deemed to have one of the more clever and humorous names. (Orange you glad I'm here to cure your scurvey) Grace Mahon, Nestor Prohm and Haijing Zheng received highly commended awards. They were presented with a certificate and a handsome medallion. An extra-special mention goes to Alice McCann who not only achieved a highly commended, she was also awarded the Best in Stage 5 award for her project "What have you got to lose". It was chosen from 578 other quality entries submitted by a total of 84 schools. She received a cash prize of $300, certificate and trophy.
Smith's Hill High School was also awarded a prize for the best overall performance on the day. This was calculated from the average marks received by the top 7 entries from each school. This also validates the judgement of the Year 11 Science students who chose these projects from 119 entries at the school Science Fair.
More information on the day and a photo gallery can be found at the university's website.
Where to next? Students are invited to enter into the STANSW Young Scientist Competition. More information can be found at http://www.youngscientist.com.au/.
