Outstanding Results from Mathematics Students

39th Annual Australian Mathematics Competition 2016 (AMC)

This is one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar which began in 1978 and has participants from Australia, the Pacific and South East Asian regions.

It is with great pleasure that the Mathematics department of SHHS would like to announce some outstanding results from this Mathematics competition.

This year 155 students entered and it is the first time we have achieved not one but two prize winners.

Ellen Zheng – Year 10 - Ellen also achieved the ‘Best in the School' Award for the most correct answers consecutively.

Benjamin Yan – Year 8

Benjamin was also invited to an Enrichment Workshop for gifted young mathematicians. This workshop was held on Friday 11 November at Randwick Girls High School. Following this workshop, Benjamin attended the AMT Awards Ceremony where he was presented with a commemorative certificate for his achievement.

Eligibility for selection in the Australian International Mathematical Olympiad Team and AMOC Training Programs

As a first for SHHS we have 2 candidates who have been selected to attend this year's AMOC Mathematics School of Excellence at the University of Melbourne from 1 - 10 December 2016.

There will be a total of 30 students from across Australia. The main purpose of the School will be to help identify and develop the skills of students who may become members of the Australian Team to compete at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held in Rio de Janeiro from 12 – 23 July 2017.

A huge congratulations to ELLEN ZHENG and ANDREW VIRGONA on their selection for this amazing program.
