Alumni Life: Austin Kennedy-Bates

alumni

Recalling his time at Smith’s Hill High School, Austin Kennedy-Bates says that, “[It} provided me with an environment where learning, academic achievement and creativity were allowed to flourish. Smith’s Hill gave us the freedom to be who and what we wanted to be. I’ve never heard of another place like it, and am still grateful for my time there.”

Austin, now Melbourne based, is presently working as a freelance artist and designer and helping to build a new online platform and community for artists and art sales.

“I always loved History, Drama and Visual Arts electives in Junior School and did Modern History, Extension History, 3 Unit English, Society & Culture, Visual Arts and Studies of Religion in my HSC. I enjoyed them all, and they all empowered me with critical and analytical thinking that has served me well in life.

Austin agrees that electing Visual Arts in high school helped create his career path: “I wouldn’t be an artist/designer otherwise! I think the critical, analytical skills I learned in HSC Visual Arts were especially helpful – similarly the textual analysis skills learned (and taught so well) in English have empowered me with a critical lens to see and understand the world and meaning around me.”

“I did a Cert II in Drawing at TAFE while I was still at school.”  Since high school Austin has done lots of study (History and Sociology as well as Fine Arts) with “plenty of bumming around in between; I’ve been in no rush.”

He has completed a double degree in Fine Arts/Arts at the UNSW and is currently doing a Diploma of Graphic Design/Associates Degree at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology).

Austin’s art making is something that he is unwilling to compromise on… “I ONLY really do it for myself and I believe that’s how it should be. Other people liking it and (heaven forbid) buying it is a bonus! (And an unbelievable privilege).”

His primary practice is painting, employing acrylic and spray paint, but doodles on everything he can get his hands on and uses digital editing software to augment his art making.

His design for the indie musician Jayma, viewable on his website, is very cool and shows his visual perception that echoes a musical composition beautifully: www.austinkennedybates.com.au

While the year 2020 was very challenging with the Covid19 pandemic, Austin considers himself one of the lucky few who in some ways benefitted from COVID: “It interrupted my graphic design studies, forcing me to work from home, but then I actually got COVID (my partner is a nurse). I wasn’t too sick, but had to drop out of uni. That was a bit of a bummer, but with my new found time, I rediscovered my love for painting and sold almost all the works I produced during quarantine/lockdown. Seeing a work hanging in people’s houses is the biggest thrill of all.

His artwork is edgy and exciting with a clear personal aesthetic that has emerged over a decade.

Austin is now examining the concept of blockchain Non Fudgeable Tokens (NFT), the next big thing in authenticating and tracking the ownership of digital artworks as well as building his social media profile: “You have to put yourself out there to get success.”

In closing, his advice to current Smithshillians is: “Don’t leave your art major work til the last minute, the paint will smudge in the car!” and “Don’t let anyone tell you can’t get a job with an arts or fine arts degree. You’re amongst the smartest kids in the country, so whatever you put your mind to, you’ll nail.”
