Dear Students, Parents and Carers,
Firstly, hello from your SHHS Library team. A few reminders: we love supporting our students in their leisure reading habits. There is reliable research that shows students who read books for leisure, and read often, will grow more in areas including academic achievement, and social & emotional wellbeing. Students are encouraged to borrow anytime during Library opening hours (Mon 8.00am – 2.05pm, Tues-Fri 8.00am -2.45pm). Ebooks and Audiobooks are also available 24/7; learn more by clicking here.
Secondly, we know there are times when our students want to try new ways of thinking and learning, particularly in areas of study techniques, research strategies and organisation. When students want or need to learn these things doesn’t always align with when they are taught them.
Our school library website is available 24/7 and presents opportunities for self-directed habit and skill development. The website has all sorts of pages that can support students when they need it. On the library website, there are specialised guides with evidence-based strategies in a variety of areas of thinking and learning including:
- Introduction to Study Skills
- Goal Setting
- Study Planners including a section on distributed practice (how to remember more with less effort) and tips on why you need breaks, fun and social time!
- Self-Advocacy (talking to teachers about your learning)
There are three pages with metacognitive approaches to the three stages of the exam and assessment cycle:
- Study and Exam Preparation (what are better ways of studying than just reading your notes -there are some surprising ones!)
- Exam Anxiety
- Exam and Assessment Feedback (what to do with all that teacher feedback)
How does this all work?
Students (and Parents/Carers) can click on any of those links above, or click here to browse the SHHS library website. If students find something they want to try they can read the guide and download any printable tools, e.g. the weekly study timetable template. To support our students who are independently improving these skills and habits, we now have in the library a collection of printed and ready to use pages such as the study timetable template, tools for metacognitively analysing exam and assessment feedback and more. Students are always welcome to chat to Mr (Library) Jones for help and encouragement.
