Tournament of Minds Internationals

**NEWSFLASH**

Smith’s Hill are International Tournament of Minds Champions Again!

Why have Noam Chomsky, Hannah Gadsby, Tara June Winch all met together in an isolated cabin on a dark and stormy night? Who has brought them together? For what purpose? And what will the impact of this momentous meeting be on the world?

These were the questions facing our incredible Language-Literature team last Saturday morning as they competed in the Tournament of Minds International Final via Zoom. Our innovative team of Maeve Bradbury, Jaquiline Jogen, Marlon Macnab, Michael McCann, Ivy McIntosh, Rebecca Winn and Eli Zorn met the judges in a breakout room and proceeded to concoct a fantastical tale, one which involved the Greek god Hermes (in disguise as a cosmic turtle!) bringing together three famous people to obliterate the media’s control of our language throughout society. In the end, they created a new language of literary synaesthesia. And all of this achieved in a mere fifteen minutes!

The team had a nervous wait until last Sunday night for the awards ceremony, but such was the nature of their performance the day before that optimism was high, and our team was justly rewarded with first place.

This victory by our phenomenal Language-Literature team builds on our success in Tournament of Minds and has helped add to the legacy and legend of Smith’s Hill, winning four disciplines at International level in the past four years. A huge ‘bravo’ to all involved!

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

While most were enjoying their first weekend of the Term 3 holidays, three talented SHHS teams were battling it out at the virtual Tournament of Minds State Final on Sunday, 19 September. Students were faced with a previously unseen Extended Spontaneous Challenge, during which they had just 15 minutes to devise and deliver an ingenious solution to a panel of judges.

All teams collaborated seamlessly and presented magnificent responses rich in creativity, reflecting their admirable dedication and hours of training prior to Tournament Day. This did not go unnoticed by the judges – our brilliant Arts team won Honours in their division and our unstoppable Language Literature team emerged victorious over seven other prime NSW teams to ultimately claim the win!

Well done to all of our incredible teams and we will be cheering on Language Literature at the International Final this Saturday, 16 October. Bravo!
