Sophia Marosszeky is the funniest

sophia marosszeky

The funniest school comedian in the State, that is!

Last Monday night, Sophia went to the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta to compete at the State Class Clowns Competition. Along with the eight other competitors from across the State, she did a three-hour workshop with the talented stand-up comedian and improviser, Rebecca De Unamuno, who taught them the key aspects of stand-up comedy and how to improve their acts through rhythm and audience engagement.

As the audience entered the theatre, Sophia reminded herself to have fun on stage, but she had to hold the nerves at bay as she was the last performance of the night. This was a great sign, as the ‘headliner’ usually is the final act! Each competitor was allowed five minutes of material, and Sophia had her audience rolling in the aisles in fits of laughter. It was a great reaction to her comedy gold, and she was very happy with such an overwhelming reaction.

After a short wait, Sophia was announced as the winner of State Class Clowns and she puts a little of her success down to the magic in her sequined blazer. The next step is a trip down south, where Sophia will be performing at the International Melbourne Comedy Festival, representing the school, and competing with the best in the country at The Forum. There are rumours that professional stand-up comedians love to attend and support young comedians. Maybe this is the start of something a lot bigger! Sophia is thankful for her Drama teachers, Mr Reveleigh and Mr Cutler, for helping nurture her self-confidence and teaching her about the ins and outs of comedy and improvisation, as well as her 11 years at The Drama Studio at the IPAC. She is so excited to go to Melbourne, and we can’t wait to hear all about her experiences. Go Sophia!
