Over the past week in geography, our class has been learning how to conduct fieldwork. We decided to investigate “How Much Does Social Media Affect Your Schoolwork”. We are interested in seeing the effects on young teenagers’ addiction to social media on their motivation to complete school work and how severely it distracts them.

Research shows us that social networking and watching movies were most negatively associated with academic performance. It also showed a link between social media and fewer academic behaviours, such as completing homework and attending class. Lower academic confidence and more problems affecting their school work leg. lack of sleep and substance use. By surveying 87 school students ranging from 7-12, our results confirmed this research.

Our results found that 72% of school students from years 7-12 spend upwards of 1-2 hours on their devices of an afternoon. 56% of people found that social media severely distracts them whilst completing school work. They said that they find the notifications distracting when trying to complete school work. 10.3% of people said that yes, they have handed in an assessment or task in late because of social media. Those who haven’t said they have strategies in place such as turning their phone off or putting it in another room. Lastly, 89.7% of people said that if social media did not exist, they would be more productive and motivated to complete their school work. We believe that this is because of the addictive nature of social media apps. They are constantly supplying media content for their users through the explore or suggested pages.

Study participants believe that they would be less distracted and have a more positive can-do attitude towards their school work.
